End of an Era?

It’s offial, Blair will be leaving 12 months from now. So, the end of the Blair Supremcy is in sight – or is it? True enough, it is likely that this is no fable. Let’s face it, he might want to beat Thatcher’s reign* but the pressure is really on him. You can only ignore the people for so long. But is this really the end of it all? Will our successor lead us into a glorious era just as Blair had done after the disastererous Thatcher Era and equally tumultuous Major years? Or have we been deceived? Well, while many celebrate I can’t help but feel anticipation as I await the true Devil to step forth and usurp his rightful place as our Prime Minister. I speak of course of noneother than the true master, Gordon Brown.

Now as many will have realised, George Bush is by no means the true American leader. Nay, he is a figureheard, a stateman, a physical manifestation of the true power: the American Government, more specifically the elected party. What does this have to to with Blair and Brown? It’s quite elementry my dear Watson, the Prime Minister has no power. Not because of his position, oh no, Thatcher made it quite clear anyone can hold Britain’s balls but only one person can. Blair isn’t it. He started out well enough but he soon succumbed to the call of Brown. Brown, his right hand, has forever been at the forefront of Labour’s biggest issues and stepped back when Blair clearly has been given free reign – i.e. the disasters.

I must say Brown does a marvellous job of playing the puppeteer. Loyal, strong, faithful to the Prime Minister; yes, he knows how to play the part but let’s face it, we all know Brown and Blair’s relationship has long since been flushed down the pan. I can imagine how delighted Brown must have been at the removal of not one but three consecutive Labour powers this year. I refer of course to the blunders this year that resulted in the removal and resignation of ex-British Home Secretary Charles Clarke, the ‘reassignment’ of Deputy Prime Minister** John Prescott and of course the wonderfully venomous Patricia Hewitt. And let’s not forget the other scandals – alas, ’tis neither the time nor place to call them into existence. You can hunt them down of your own accord but suffice to say they, much like the problems of latter Thatcherism, have brought about Blair’s demise. Much to Brown’s glee.

He remains the dutiful supporter but how long ’til we see the truth? Will Brown ever take his throne? Perhaps.

And what will happen should Brown come to power? I have no doubt that the brown nosing between Blair and Bush is not something Brown approves of (though it’s a wonderful tool) so what of the relationship between the greatest of allies? Hmm, Brown would be a fool to destroy it completely, we have nothing to gain from it, not while the government can manipulate the situation for its own benefit. But I suspect the buddy-buddy approach will cease to be. Blair and Bush share similar visions, and of course they have something of a spiritua link; Brown and Bush? Chalk, meet Cheese’ lesser known cousin, Numbing Inevitability. I’m curious though. How much of what Blair has done has truly been supported by the Chancellor? If he has then we may well see another reign of arrogant tyranny, if not…well…

So, I bid a prompt farewell to the autocratic authoritarian who has done his utmost to give the Iron Lady a run for her money. God bless, Tony Blair, and good luck. You will need it, oh Rusted Lord.

* Thatcher served 11 years; Blair has served 9, next year will be 10.
** His powers were transfered but to appease him Blair allowed him to retain his title; so he’s not really our DPM. Nice huh? Now we hand out titles to appease idiotic dipshits who abuse their position.

  2. Difficult one Jay! I don’t know where you stand on the political spectrum, but to be honest – I can’t think of anyone in the cabinet, shadow cabinet or leader of their party that would have been a better PM over the last 3 terms as Tony Blair has. Nor would I really have wanted anyone to run the country except him. I think the media sometimes jumps on stories and overhypes them to the detriment of the country, and has probably undermined the power of the cabinet forever. The fact that the media can effectively drop any member of the cabinet it wishes (except Prescott, heh) with a long running news story is ridiculous.

I don’t know what will happen a year from now. I don’t like David Cameron, I wouldn’t vote for him as much as I don’t think Ming Campbell could run the country, nor do I think Brown can do a good job outside of running an excellent chancellory. Does anyone actually have a clue on what Brown’s policies are? Cameron’s apart from that he’s “green”? I am just lost, completely lost… on British politics. I might run myself haha
